Community Engagement on Wheels: How OCCC is Redefining STEM Outreach
Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) is setting a new standard for collegiate learning by bringing immersive, hands-on educational experiences directly to the community.
“Through the vision and determination of our computer science department, OCCC has created the Mobile Technology Unit (MTU), a state-of-the-art, tech-enabled van designed to make STEM and industry-focused education accessible to all,” said John Claybon, Dean of Business and Information Technology Division.
How the Mobile Technology Unit Operates
The MTU functions as a mobile classroom and technology lab. This allows the unit to deliver technology-driven learning experiences in a wide variety of settings. Its destinations are chosen in close partnership with OCCC recruiters to ensure strategic outreach.
Although the MTU has visited only three destinations so far, plans are to expand into schools, festivals, community meet-ups, Chamber of Commerce meets, and unique local events such as “Coffee and Cars.” These visits enable community members to interact with technology and learn about OCCC’s offerings in an approachable and engaging environment.
Setting the Standard for Collegiate Learning
OCCC is committed to educational inclusivity, making learning accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background.
“The MTU is central to this mission, supporting recruitment efforts not only among high school students but also among adult learners, career changers, and those seeking enrichment,” stated Sara Mathew, Professor of Computer Science and Department Chair.
They meet future students where they are, whether at schools, events, or public gatherings. OCCC is redefining collegiate outreach, making the pathway to higher education more flexible and inviting.
Innovation, Leadership, and Real-World Experience
The MTU was conceived by the computer science department and designed with the creative input of an OCCC alumnus, Paige Smiley, who assisted with both exterior and interior design and led the complete setup. The unit stands out by offering a range of hands-on tech scenarios and modules, including the opportunity for students to practice troubleshooting and repairing damaged laptops and tablets. This real-world training gives participants the chance to immerse themselves in the realm of technology.
Leadership and peer mentorship are also at the core of the MTU experience. Current OCCC computer science students can serve as student ambassadors, guiding modules, supporting visitors, and representing the college in the field. This ambassador program not only empowers students with leadership
experience but also provides a bridge between academic learning and the professional world.

Community Partnerships and Future Plans
The MTU plays a vital role in OCCC’s partnership with their industry partners. The department has supported STEM awareness and concurrent enrollment by participating in events for local schools in Oklahoma City, Moore, and Mustang, to name a few. Partnerships with local industry expand opportunities for both OCCC and the community, facilitating innovative outreach and awareness of STEM careers.
“We hold the utmost respect for the college’s commitment to advancing hands-on learning and technological innovation, said John Hennessey, Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and OneNet. “OCCC’s initiative is opening new doors for students of all ages, and we wholeheartedly wish continued success for the MTU and its ambassadors.”
Looking Ahead
OCCC plans to extend MTU’s reach. The college envisions the MTU as a regular presence at schools, neighborhood gatherings, and regional festivals, always seeking fresh ways to connect, inspire, and educate.
With its Mobile Technology Unit, OCCC is pioneering a new era of educational outreach, one defined by hands-on experiences and genuine community engagement. By combining the flexibility of hotspot-powered mobility with a future-focused vision, OCCC ensures that students of all backgrounds are encouraged to explore STEM and industry-focused careers. The MTU is not just a van; it’s an opportunity to learn, inspire a new generation, and set a new benchmark for what collegiate recruitment and education can accomplish.
