CISA Offers Cyber Defense Services for SLTT Governments
America’s Cyber Defense Agency offers a variety of services to help governments manage their cyber postures and unpredictable situations. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) offers resources and tools to help state, local, tribal and territorial governments, or SLTTs, protect our nation’s infrastructure, regardless of how large or small.
CISA provides SLTTs with several free services. Here are a few that your SLTT might find helpful.
Cyber Hygiene Services
CISA’s cyber hygiene services scan for network vulnerabilities and security risks that could potentially allow bad actors to breach a government agency’s network.
- According to CISA, organizations taking advantage of cyber hygiene services see a 40% decrease in cybersecurity risks within the first 12 months.
- The combined knowledge and experience help SLTTs sharpen responses and avoid surprises by helping them be better prepared for potential security breaches.
- CISA updates SLTTs on security vulnerabilities and notifies agencies of any findings, regardless of urgency. It also explains the best next step, preparing governments for future decision-making.
Infrastructure Survey Tool
If a government agency hasn’t yet utilized CISA’s services, the infrastructure survey tool or IST is a great place to start. The IST allows SLTTs to complete a web-based survey to assess overall security. CISA then provides a written report and dashboard explaining which areas the SLTT is doing well and where there are security risks. CISA provides this information for both physical infrastructure and cyberinfrastructure.
If done periodically, IST can help map out ongoing changes and further assist SLTTs in deciding where to apply additional efforts for optimal defense.
Cybersecurity Performance Goals List
The Cybersecurity Performance Goal Assessment is a set of practices selected and reviewed by experts that create a baseline for cybersecurity efforts to improve defense. CISA offers a checklist to assess the complexity and impact of protective techniques. The checklist also offers recommended actions and any free, related services CISA offers.
From webinars and programs to informational handouts, CISA offers a wide range of services at no cost to SLTTs. OneNet government subscribers have access to CISA’s resources, expertise, and knowledge. Regardless of the size of your government agency, you will find assistance to keep your organization secure and protected against cyber threats.
