Third Phase of OneNet’s 400G Network Upgrade Deploys New Equipment at 27 Hubsites
OneNet achieved another milestone in October, completing phase three of our 400G network upgrade. This phase deployed new network equipment at 27 hubsites across Oklahoma.
The 27 hubsites extend as far west as Elk City and as far east as Sallisaw, reaching subscribers throughout the state.
OneNet’s engineering team, led by Senior Network Architect Drew Graham, modernized and standardized equipment at the 27 hubsites.
“With this equipment upgrade, our equipment footprint is smaller. We were managing four to five different router models at our hubsites, and we reduced that to two or three models,” Graham said. “This footprint is simpler to manage and helps us deliver higher capacity services to our subscribers in a cost-effective manner.”
Equipment Deployment
The new routing equipment increased capacity at each hubsite from single, or at some multiple, 10G links to two 400G links. This increase enables OneNet to provide up to 100G of service to subscribers from all the locations.
Many of the locations also serve as fiber huts for the Oklahoma Community Anchor Network (OCAN), a 1,100-mile optical network that serves 35 Oklahoma counties. OneNet manages OCAN and leverages the network to provide service for our subscribers on the OCAN path.
Meeting Subscriber Bandwidth Requirements
The first two phases of the network upgrade connected OneNet to the Great Plains Network and Internet2 at 400G and upgraded connections to 400G for the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. The project is driven by the ever-increasing bandwidth requirements for the subscribers OneNet serves.
“Not only are higher education institutions requiring higher bandwidths, but more schools, libraries and health care providers are needing additional bandwidth as well,” Graham said. “OneNet is growing our capacity to serve their needs now and in the future.”
Graham said his team planned the network upgrade to provision capacity effectively so we can meet these increasing bandwidth needs for all of our subscribers.
Next Steps
The final phase of the upgrade will include upgrading our connection to Dallas from three 100G links to two 400G links. This phase will also upgrade connectivity to 400G at a newly built hubsite in Durant. This hubsite upgrade will complete the last portion of our core network.
“When the upgrade is complete, OneNet will be positioned to meet our subscribers’ bandwidth requirements for the next few years,” Graham said. “Throughout the process, we have paid attention to detail in both the design and workmanship to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our subscribers.”
